A mountain in the Abarim range east of the Jordan, opposite Jericho. From its summit (Pisgah) the Lord showed Moses the entire Promised Land — all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim, and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, unto the utmost sea (Deut 34:1-3). Moses died there at age 120; the Lord buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, but no man knows the place of his sepulcher unto this day (Deut 34:5-6).
MOUNT NEBO, n.
A scriptural proper name; the mountain east of the Jordan from which Moses viewed Canaan and where he died.
Deuteronomy 34:1 — "And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho."
Deuteronomy 34:4 — "I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither."
Deuteronomy 34:5 — "So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord."
Numbers 27:12 — "Get thee up into this mount Abarim, and see the land which I have given unto the children of Israel."
Moses saw the Promised Land but did not enter; modern Christianity often forgets that some saints finish at Nebo.
Deuteronomy 34 is one of the most poignant chapters in the Bible. Moses, after forty years in the wilderness leading Israel to the threshold of Canaan, climbs Mount Nebo at the Lord's command, sees the entire Promised Land with his own eyes, and dies. The Lord Himself buries him — the only burial in Scripture conducted directly by God — in an unmarked grave.
Modern Christianity often expects the saint to enter every promised land before death. Moses did not. He saw it; he did not enter it; the Lord still loved him and called him my servant. Some assignments end at Nebo. The man who dies at the threshold without crossing is not a failure; he is a faithful Moses. The next generation crosses; the previous generation rests with the Lord. Both are honor.
"Moses saw the Promised Land but did not enter; some assignments end at Nebo."
"The man who dies at the threshold is not a failure; he is a faithful Moses."
"The Lord Himself buried him — the only burial in Scripture conducted directly by God."
