A prominent isolated mountain rising about 1,900 feet above the Jezreel Valley in lower Galilee. Deborah and Barak mustered ten thousand men here before descending to defeat Sisera (Judg 4:6-14). The mountain was a frontier landmark between Issachar, Naphtali, and Zebulun. Christian tradition since Origen has identified Mount Tabor as the site of the Transfiguration of Christ (Matt 17:1-8), though many scholars now favor Mount Hermon based on the proximity to Caesarea Philippi.
MOUNT TABO, n.
A scriptural proper name; a prominent isolated mountain in lower Galilee.
Judges 4:6 — "Hath not the Lord God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount Tabor."
Judges 4:14 — "Up; for this is the day in which the Lord hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: so Barak went down from mount Tabor."
Psalm 89:12 — "Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy name."
Matthew 17:2 — "And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light."
Mount Tabor stands isolated in the valley; the Lord uses prominent landmarks to launch decisive obedience.
Mount Tabor is one of the most visually striking mountains in Galilee — a single steep dome rising from the broad Jezreel Valley. Deborah ordered Barak to muster Israel's army on its summit, then to descend to engage Sisera in the valley. The geography is theological: gather strength on the heights, then go down with the Lord into the battle.
Whether or not Tabor was the actual mount of Transfiguration, the principle endures. Christ took Peter, James, and John up into a high mountain apart for the unveiling of His glory; then He led them back down into a valley where a demoniac boy needed deliverance (Matt 17:14ff.). Saints are taken up for vision and brought down for service. Spend time on the mountain; descend with the Lord into the battle.
