Nation
/ ˈnā-shən /
noun
From Latin natio — birth, race, people; from nasci (to be born). Hebrew: gôy (גּוֹי) — nation, people, Gentile; and 'am (עַם) — people, tribe, kinfolk. Greek: ethnos (ἔθνος) — nation, people group; root of "ethnic."

📖 Biblical Definition

A nation in Scripture is a distinct people group — defined by shared lineage, land, language, and law — over whom God exercises sovereign governance. Nations are not accidents of history but creations of divine providence: "He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place" (Acts 17:26). The Great Commission targets every ethnos (nation/people group), and Revelation pictures the redeemed as "from every tribe and language and people and nation" (Rev. 5:9). Nations will persist into eternity — the New Jerusalem receives the glory and honor of nations (Rev. 21:26).

📜 Webster 1828 Definition

NATION, n. 1. A body of people inhabiting the same country, or united under the same sovereign government; as the English nation; the French nation. It often happens that many nations are subject to one government; in which case, the word nation usually denotes a body of people speaking the same language, or a body that has formerly been under a distinct government, but has been conquered, or incorporated with a larger nation. 2. A family; a people descended from a common progenitor.

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Globalist ideology treats national identity as an obstacle to human progress — a vestige of tribalism to be overcome by transnational governance and borderless identity. On the other end, ethno-nationalism elevates blood and soil above all else, making race the supreme organizing category. Scripture charts a different course: nations are real, God-ordained, and legitimate (Acts 17:26), but they are subordinate to the Kingdom of God. Neither the abolition nor the idolization of nations reflects biblical wisdom. Nations exist to serve human flourishing under God's law; they are not ends in themselves.
