"Nifty" is mid-twentieth-century American slang — a mild positive adjective for something cleverly designed or attractively practical: "that’s a nifty trick," "a nifty little gadget." The slang is era-stamped (1940s-60s) and gently disappearing from contemporary speech. Its underlying instinct, however, is healthy: appreciation for craftsmanship, clever design, and practical excellence — an instinct the biblical man shares. "And he hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship" (Exodus 35:31) — of Bezalel’s God-given craftsmanship in the tabernacle. Craft well-done is a small reflection of the Creator who built well. Honor the craftsman. Use the word again.
Pre-Boomer / Boomer mild positive: clever, deftly designed, attractively practical.
NIFTY, adj. (American slang, late 19th c.–mid 20th c. peak) Mild positive: clever, neatly designed, attractively practical. Era-stamped 1940s-60s vocabulary. Faded from active use by the 1980s but instantly recognizable as pre-Boomer / Boomer.
Exodus 35:30-35 — "And Moses said unto the children of Israel, See, the LORD hath called by name Bezaleel... And he hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship."
Proverbs 22:29 — "Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men."
Mostly healthy slang; the underlying instinct (appreciation for craft and clever design) is biblical.
Nifty is one of the cleaner slang words a generation has handed down. Its underlying instinct — that a thing well-made is worth noticing — runs straight back to Bezalel in Exodus 35, filled with the Spirit of God for craft. The Christian who notices and praises good work is participating, in a small way, in the Creator's own pattern of and God saw that it was good.
The recovery for this generation is not abandoning the instinct but extending it. Notice clever design; praise diligent work; honor the craftsman (Prov 22:29). The world has plenty of cynicism; less appreciation for a job well done. The biblical man brings appreciation.
