The oil of anointing in Scripture represents the setting apart of persons and objects for sacred service. Priests were anointed to serve at the altar, kings were anointed to rule, and prophets were anointed to speak God's word. The anointing oil symbolized the Holy Spirit's empowerment and consecration. Christ is the ultimate Anointed One — anointed with the Spirit "above his companions" (Hebrews 1:9). In the New Testament, James instructs elders to anoint the sick with oil and pray (James 5:14), and John writes that believers have received an anointing from the Holy One (1 John 2:20).
ANOINT: To pour oil upon; to smear or rub over with oil or other unctuous substances; to consecrate by unction.
ANOINT', v.t. [Fr. oindre, from L. inungo.] 1. To pour oil upon; to smear or rub over with oil or unctuous substances. 2. To consecrate by unction, or the use of oil. In Scripture, to anoint signifies to set apart for an office, by pouring oil on the head of the person.
• Exodus 30:23-25 — The recipe for the holy anointing oil given to Moses.
• 1 Samuel 16:13 — "Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him... and the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon David."
• James 5:14 — "Let them anoint Him with oil in the name of the Lord."
• 1 John 2:20 — "You have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge."
Anointing oil has been commercialized and treated as a magical substance.
The modern charismatic market sells "anointing oil" as though it possesses inherent spiritual power. Bottles of oil from the Holy Land are marketed with promises of healing, blessing, and spiritual breakthrough. This is not anointing — it is superstition bordering on sorcery. The oil in Scripture was never the source of power; it was a symbol of the Holy Spirit's work. The power belongs to God, not to olive oil. Similarly, the concept of "the anointing" has been detached from Christ and applied to charismatic preachers who claim a special spiritual endowment that elevates them above ordinary believers — a dangerous distortion of priesthood-of-all-believers theology.
• "The anointing oil pointed to the Holy Spirit's consecration — the power was never in the oil but in the God who commanded its use."
• "Christ is the ultimate Anointed One — every priest, king, and prophet anointed with oil foreshadowed Him."
