Omnipotence
/ɒmˈnɪp.ə.təns/
noun
From Latin omnipotentia — all-powerfulness; from omnis (all) + potens (powerful, able). Greek: pantokratōr (G3841) — the All-Ruler, Almighty; from pas (all) + kratos (strength, dominion). Hebrew: Shaddai (H7706) — the Almighty, connected to power and sufficiency.

📖 Biblical Definition

Omnipotence is the divine attribute by which God possesses all power and is able to do all that He wills to do. He is constrained only by His own perfect nature — He cannot lie (Titus 1:2), cannot deny Himself (2 Tim. 2:13), and cannot will contradictions. But within the scope of His holy will, nothing is impossible for Him (Luke 1:37). God's omnipotence is not brute force but purposeful, sovereign power exercised in perfect wisdom and goodness. It is the guarantee that His promises will be kept and His purposes will stand.

📜 Webster 1828 Definition

OMNIPOTENCE, n. Unlimited or infinite power; almightiness; the power of God, which is the power to do all things. Omnipotence is one of the attributes of God. The quality of being omnipotent or almighty; that attribute of God, by which he is able to effect whatever he pleases, nothing being too hard for the Almighty.

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Open theism and process theology have attacked divine omnipotence by arguing that God "limits" Himself in response to human freedom — making His power fundamentally reactive and contingent. This redefines God more as a cosmic resource manager than the sovereign Creator. On the other end, popular theology reduces omnipotence to a vending machine — "God can do anything, so He can give me whatever I want." Both distortions miss the biblical picture: God's power is always exercised in accord with His will, His wisdom, and His covenant promises.
