To overcome (nikao) in Scripture is to conquer through persevering faith in Christ. The overcomer is not a spiritual elite but every genuine believer who endures to the end. "Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?" (1 John 5:5). The victory belongs to Christ, and believers participate in it by faith. "In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world" (John 16:33). The overcomers in Revelation conquer "by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony" (Revelation 12:11) — not by their own strength but by Christ's finished work.
To conquer; to vanquish; to subdue; to gain the superiority.
OVERCOME', v.t. 1. To conquer; to vanquish; to subdue. 2. To surmount; to get the better of. 3. To overflow; to surcharge. Note: Webster's first definition — to conquer and subdue — captures the spiritual warfare dimension. Biblical overcoming is conquest through faith in the conquering Christ.
• 1 John 5:4-5 — "This is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith."
• Revelation 12:11 — "They conquered Him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony."
• John 16:33 — "Take heart; I have overcome the world."
• Revelation 2:7 — "To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life."
• Romans 8:37 — "In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us."
Overcoming is redefined as self-help victory over personal obstacles rather than spiritual conquest through faith.
Modern Christianity has redefined "overcoming" as defeating personal problems — overcoming anxiety, overcoming financial trouble, overcoming low self-esteem. While God certainly helps His people through trials, the biblical concept of overcoming is far more radical. It is victory over sin, death, Satan, and the entire fallen world-system through faith in Christ. The overcomer in Revelation is not someone who achieved financial freedom — it is someone who refused to worship the beast even at the cost of his life. Prosperity theology turns overcoming into a synonym for worldly success; Scripture defines it as faithfulness unto death. The overcomer's reward is not a bigger house — it is the tree of life, the crown of life, and a seat with Christ on His throne.
• "Biblical overcoming is not defeating your personal problems — it is conquering the world, the flesh, and the devil through faith in the Lamb who was slain."
• "Every genuine believer is an overcomer — not by personal strength but by the blood of Christ and the word of their testimony."
