The God of Scripture is not identical with creation -- He is its Maker and Lord. "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). The Creator is distinct from the creation. He is transcendent -- above and beyond it -- while also being immanent, present within it. Pantheism collapses this distinction by identifying God with nature. But if God IS the tree, the rock, and the cancer cell, then God is both good and evil, which Scripture denies. If everything is God, then nothing is God in any meaningful sense. The biblical God is personal, speaks, judges, loves, and saves -- none of which an impersonal pantheistic force can do. Paul condemned those who "exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator" (Romans 1:25).
The doctrine that the universe is God, or that all things are God.
PAN'THEISM, n. The doctrine that the universe is God; or the system of theology in which it is maintained that the universe is the supreme God. Note: Webster correctly identified pantheism as the identification of God with the universe. He recognized this as incompatible with biblical theism, which maintains God's transcendence over and distinction from His creation.
• Romans 1:25 — "They worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever."
• Isaiah 40:22 — "It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers."
• Acts 17:24-25 — "The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth."
• Isaiah 55:8-9 — "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways."
Pantheism enters the church through New Age spirituality, environmentalism, and mysticism.
"God is in everything / everything is God" repackages pantheism as spirituality, marketed in wellness culture, yoga, and "we're all one" sloganism. The corruption is making it sound humble and inclusive while it actually denies the Creator-creature distinction Scripture builds everything on.
• "Pantheism says everything is God -- Scripture says God made everything, which is a radically different claim."
• "If God IS the cancer cell, the earthquake, and the virus, then pantheism makes God the author of evil."
• "Paul's condemnation in Romans 1:25 is aimed directly at the pantheistic impulse: worshiping the creature rather than the Creator."
