Passover Night
PAS-oh-ver NYTE
noun phrase
From the night of Exodus 12: the angel of death "passing over" houses marked with the lamb's blood.

📖 Biblical Definition

Passover Night was the night of YHWH’s tenth and final plague upon Egypt — the death of every firstborn man and beast — while houses marked with the blood of an unblemished lamb on doorposts and lintel were "passed over" (Exodus 12:1-30). Inside each marked house the family ate the lamb roasted, with unleavened bread and bitter herbs, loins girded, sandals on, staff in hand — ready to march. "And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you" (12:13). The next morning Israel marched out of Egypt. The night is the defining act of Israel’s redemption — and the type of Christ the Lamb whose blood marks the believer’s doorpost.

📜 Webster 1828 Definition

Exod 12 night: angel of death passes over blood-marked houses.

The night of YHWH's tenth and final plague on Egypt. The angel of death struck every Egyptian firstborn (man and beast). Israelite houses marked with the blood of an unblemished lamb (sacrificed and eaten in haste, with bitter herbs and unleavened bread) on the two doorposts and the lintel were passed over. Pharaoh finally released Israel that night; the exodus began. The annual Passover commemoration was instituted as perpetual memorial (Exod 12:14). Christ was crucified at Passover; Paul declares "Christ our passover is sacrificed for us" (1 Cor 5:7); the cross is the cosmic Passover.

📖 Key Scripture

Exodus 12:13"And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt."

Exodus 12:23"For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you."

1 Corinthians 5:7"Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Often kept as ancient ritual without seeing how the Passover-Christ identification redefines all atonement.

Christ as our Passover is one of the most concentrated typological identifications in Scripture. The blood of the lamb on the doorposts; the angel of death passing over; deliverance from slavery to a new land. Each detail is gospel.

Recover the depth: the Passover lamb was without blemish (Christ sinless); the blood marked the door (Christ's blood applied to the heart); the household ate the lamb (the saint feeds on Christ); the family departed in haste (the disciple is pilgrim). Every Passover detail preaches.
