The precious blood of Christ is the atoning sacrifice by which sinners are redeemed from the curse of the law. Peter writes: "You were ransomed... not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot" (1 Peter 1:18-19). The blood of Christ fulfills every Old Testament sacrifice and secures eternal redemption for all who believe. Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins (Hebrews 9:22).
Precious: of great price; costly. Blood: in theology, the atoning sacrifice of Christ.
PRE'CIOUS, a. [L. pretiosus.] Of great price; of great value; costly. BLOOD, n. The fluid which circulates through the arteries and veins; in theology, the atoning sacrifice of Christ. Note: Webster understood precious blood as the costliest substance in the universe — the blood of the Son of God offered for sinners.
• 1 Peter 1:18-19 — "You were ransomed... with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish."
• Hebrews 9:22 — "Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins."
• Ephesians 1:7 — "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses."
• Revelation 5:9 — "By your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation."
The blood atonement is dismissed as primitive, violent, or unnecessary.
Modern liberal theology finds the blood atonement offensive — calling it "cosmic child abuse." Progressive churches remove hymns about the blood and replace substitutionary atonement with vague notions of God's love. But Scripture is unambiguous: without blood there is no forgiveness. The cross is not divine abuse — it is divine love expressed through divine justice. To reject the blood is to reject the only means of salvation God has provided.
• "The precious blood of Christ is not a metaphor — it is the actual price paid for the actual redemption of actual sinners."
• "Every attempt to build Christianity without the blood of the cross produces a religion without power and without hope."
