Presumptuous
pri-ZUMP-choo-uhs
adjective
From Latin praesumere — "to take before, take for granted."

📖 Biblical Definition

Presumptuous, in Scripture, names the high-handed sin — acting boldly without warrant, against known commandment, in defiance of God. The Mosaic law distinguishes presumptuous sin sharply from sins of weakness or ignorance: "But the soul that doeth ought presumptuously... that soul shall be cut off" (Numbers 15:30-31). David’s prayer makes the doctrine personal: "Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me" (Psalm 19:13). Presumption is dangerous because it has already overruled conscience — it takes God’s mercy for license. Christian men must learn the difference between weakness (stumbling) and presumption (charging forward against the LORD), and beg God daily for the latter restraint.

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Confused with confidence; Scripture distinguishes presumption (acting without God) from faith (acting with God).

Faith and presumption look alike to the casual eye. Both step out boldly. The difference: faith goes where God has clearly sent; presumption goes where He has not. David prays daily protection from presumption. So should we.
