A rabbi in the biblical context was a teacher of the Torah — one recognized for knowledge of God's law and the ability to instruct others. Jesus was called "Rabbi" by His disciples (John 1:38), by Nicodemus (John 3:2), and even by Judas at the betrayal (Matthew 26:49). Yet Jesus warned against the rabbinical love of titles and status: "But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers" (Matthew 23:8). Christ is the ultimate Rabbi — the Teacher whose words carry divine authority and whose instruction is life itself.
A Jewish doctor or teacher. A title of respect given by the Jews to their teachers and spiritual instructors.
RAB'BI, n. [Heb. my master.] A Jewish doctor or teacher. A title of respect given by the Jews to their teachers and spiritual instructors. Note: Webster understood the term as carrying weight of honor and teaching authority within the Jewish community.
• John 1:38 — "Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, 'What are you seeking?' And they said to Him, 'Rabbi... where are you staying?'"
• Matthew 23:7-8 — "They love... being called rabbi by others. But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher."
• John 3:2 — "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God."
The love of religious titles persists in every tradition that elevates human teachers above the Word they claim to teach.
Jesus explicitly warned against the desire for religious titles and the hierarchical pride they produce. Yet Christianity has replicated the very system Christ condemned — with titles like "Reverend," "Doctor," "Bishop," and "Apostle" used to establish authority that should come from faithfulness to the Word, not from nomenclature. The corruption is not in teaching itself, which is a gift from God (Ephesians 4:11), but in the love of the title over the task, the status over the service, and the platform over the people.
• "When Nicodemus called Jesus 'Rabbi,' he was acknowledging a teacher whose authority surpassed every school of Hillel or Shammai."
• "Jesus forbade the love of the title 'Rabbi' — not because teaching is wrong, but because the craving for status is incompatible with the Kingdom."
