Return to the LORD
ri-TURN to thuh LORD
verb phrase
Hebrew shuv with YHWH; the prophetic call to repentance.

📖 Biblical Definition

"Return to the LORD" is the prophetic call par excellence — turn back to YHWH from idols, sin, exile, or indifference. The Hebrew verb shuv ("turn") is used hundreds of times and is the standard word for repentance: "Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts" (Malachi 3:7); "Turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?" (Ezekiel 33:11); "Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously" (Hosea 14:2). Shuv is the two-way verb of covenant restoration — God returning to us as we return to Him. Every reformation begins with this word.

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern repentance-language often centers on feelings ("feel sorry") rather than on the directional verb (turn back).

Pop repentance is feelings-heavy: be sorry, feel bad, do better. Hebrew shuv is directional: turn back. The feelings may follow; the verb leads. You can shuv without intense emotion if the direction-change is real.

Recover the verb: return. Turn around. The LORD answers with His own returning — "and I will return unto you." Two-way verb.
