Christ's account in Luke 16:19-31. A rich man clothed in purple and fine linen feasted sumptuously every day; Lazarus, a beggar full of sores, lay at his gate desiring crumbs. Both died. The beggar was carried by angels to Abraham's bosom; the rich man was in torments in hell. Across the chasm the rich man begged for water and for warning to his five brothers; Abraham replied: they have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
RICH MAN AND L, n.
A scriptural account of Christ; the rich man and Lazarus.
Luke 16:22 — "The beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried."
Luke 16:23 — "And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments."
Luke 16:26 — "Between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot."
Luke 16:31 — "If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead."
Modern Christianity disputes the literal hell of Luke 16; Christ Himself described it.
Luke 16:19-31 is one of the most pointed teachings of Jesus on the afterlife. Modern theological liberals often dispute the literal nature of hell; Christ Himself described it in this account — a real chasm, real flames, real conscious torment, and an unbridgeable separation. The witness of the Lord on this subject is the highest authority that exists.
The closing verse is haunting: If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead. Christ Himself rose from the dead, and most of the world remains unpersuaded. The gospel does not depend on dramatic signs; it depends on the Word. Hear Moses. Hear the prophets. Hear the apostles. The chasm is real; the time to hear is now.
