See (Biblical)
/siː/
verb
Old English seon. Hebrew raah (רָאָה); Greek horaō (ὁράω), blepō (βλέπω). To see in Scripture is never mere physical sight — it encompasses discernment, understanding, prophetic vision, and the final beatific vision.

📖 Biblical Definition

Seeing in Scripture ascends from eyeball to soul: physical sight, spiritual perception, prophetic vision, beatific vision. The prophets were called "seers" (1 Sam 9:9). Hagar named God "the God who sees" — El-Roi (Gen 16:13). Jesus opened the eyes of the physically blind and then said the Pharisees were the truly blind (John 9). "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God" (Matt 5:8). "Now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face" (1 Cor 13:12). The final glory is the face-to-face seeing — the vision of God that completes the Christian life.

📜 Webster 1828 Definition

SEE, v.t.

expand to see more

SEE, v.t. [Sax. seon.] To perceive by the eye; to discern by the mind. In Scripture, seeing is a hierarchy: physical sight, spiritual perception, prophetic vision, and the final beatific vision of God face to face. The pure in heart are promised the seeing; the unregenerate are declared blind; the prophets were called seers; Hagar in the wilderness named Him El-Roi, "the God who sees me."

📖 Key Scripture

Matthew 5:8"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God."

1 Corinthians 13:12"For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face."

Genesis 16:13"So she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, "You are a God of seeing.""

John 9:39"Jesus said, "For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.""

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern culture equates seeing with physical sight. Scripture says much of the most important seeing happens with the eyes of the heart.

expand to see more

Paul prays that "the eyes of your heart" may be enlightened (Eph 1:18). The Bible is full of people with functioning eyes who do not see — the Pharisees, the rich young ruler, the friends of Job. And it is full of people with closed physical eyes who see clearly — old Simeon holding the infant Christ, the blind man at Bethsaida after Jesus touched him. Pray for the eyes of the heart. Physical sight is a gift; spiritual sight is salvation; the beatific vision is heaven.
