Silver (Biblical)
/ˈsɪl.vər/
noun
Hebrew keseph (כֶּסֶף) — also the standard word for "money" in biblical Hebrew, since silver was the default currency. Greek argyros (ἄργυρος).

📖 Biblical Definition

Silver is Scripture's money metal and also its redemption metal. "Every one who is numbered... shall give half a shekel as an offering to the LORD... as a ransom for his life" (Ex 30:12-15). Joseph was sold for twenty pieces of silver (Gen 37:28). Judas betrayed Christ for thirty pieces of silver (Matt 26:15), fulfilling Zechariah 11:12-13. Silver is refined by fire to test purity: "the words of the LORD are pure words, like silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times" (Ps 12:6). Silver money and silver purity run together in biblical theology: money reveals the heart, refinement reveals the metal.

SIL'VER, n.

SIL'VER, n. [Sax. seolfer.] A precious metal of a white color, used for coinage and ornaments. In Scripture, silver is the default currency of the ancient near east; the metal of the temple sockets, of trumpets, of half-shekel ransom; the price of Joseph's enslavement and of Judas's betrayal; and the standard of purity when compared to the refined words of the LORD.

📖 Key Scripture

Psalm 12:6"The words of the LORD are pure words, like silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times."

Matthew 26:15"And said, "What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?" And they paid him thirty pieces of silver."

Exodus 30:16"You shall take the atonement money from the people of Israel and shall give it for the service of the tent of meeting."

Proverbs 2:4-5"If you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Silver is the Bible's money word. When Scripture mentions silver it is often tracing the heart through the wallet.

Silver in modern usage is just precious metal; Scripture uses it as the measure of redemption (thirty pieces, the sanctuary shekel) and the test of refinement (silver tried in the furnace). The corruption is losing silver's symbolic load — which makes Judas's thirty pieces lose their narrative weight.
