Spiritual warfare is the believer’s daily combat — "for we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Ephesians 6:12). Paul names the full armor of God: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God, and prayer in the Spirit at every season (Ephesians 6:13-18). Five pieces of armor and two weapons (Word, prayer). The Christian man does not put it on once; he puts it on daily, deliberately, by prayer and the Word.
ARMOR, n. Defensive arms; any habit or dress designed to defend the body from injury; figuratively, the panoply of the Christian.
1. Defensive arms; any covering worn to protect the body in battle, as a shield, helmet, breastplate, etc. 2. Figuratively, the spiritual provisions of the Christian for resisting the assaults of the devil and the world: truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, the gospel, the Word of God, and prayer.
Ephesians 6:11 — "Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil."
Ephesians 6:12 — "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world…"
Ephesians 6:17 — "And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:"
2 Corinthians 10:4 — "(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)"
Sensationalized into demon-hunting theatrics or dismissed as superstition.
Some traditions turn spiritual warfare into stage combat—binding, rebuking, naming, and shouting—until ordinary obedience looks dull. Other traditions ignore the unseen war altogether, leaving saints unarmored against very real wiles.
Paul's picture is sober and unshowy. The armor is the gospel lived in—truth held, righteousness practiced, faith raised, Word wielded, prayer breathed. The fight is daily, the foe is real, the victory is Christ's, and the posture is “stand.”
