proper noun (figure)
English Charles Haddon Spurgeon; English Particular Baptist preacher, 1834-1892.

📖 Biblical Definition

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was the English Particular Baptist preacher whose thirty-eight-year ministry at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London made him "the Prince of Preachers." Converted at fifteen in a snowed-in Primitive Methodist chapel under a layman’s impromptu sermon on Isaiah 45:22, he pastored Waterbeach Baptist Chapel at sixteen and the New Park Street Chapel in London at nineteen. His sermons were transcribed and printed weekly, distributed worldwide, and translated into dozens of languages; the collected Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit runs to 63 volumes — the largest body of sermons in church history. Major works also: The Treasury of David (Psalms commentary), Lectures to My Students, Morning and Evening. He suffered chronic gout and depression; fought the Downgrade Controversy against liberalism. He was 57 when he died.

📖 Key Scripture

Romans 1:16"I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth."

Isaiah 45:22"Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else."

1 Timothy 2:5"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."

Hebrews 4:16"Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern preachers often borrow Spurgeon's quips; few read his sermons whole. His doctrinal seriousness, gospel-centeredness, and pastoral tenderness remain a model.

Spurgeon's 1850 conversion text, Isaiah 45:22 preached by an unprepared Primitive Methodist substitute, became his life-long sermon: look unto me, and be ye saved. The simple gospel call shaped his preaching for forty years.

The Down-Grade Controversy ended his fellowship in the Baptist Union: he saw doctrinal compromise in the denomination and resigned rather than remain. The cost was real; the integrity stood. He died early, exhausted, faithful.
