Theological Triage
/θiˈɒl.ə.dʒɪ.kəl triˈɑːʒ/
noun phrase
From Greek theologia (study of God) and French triage (sorting, selection). A framework popularized by Albert Mohler for ranking doctrines by their relative importance: first-order (essential to the gospel), second-order (essential to church practice), and third-order (matters of Christian liberty).

📖 Biblical Definition

Theological triage is the discipline of distinguishing doctrines that are essential to the faith from those over which faithful Christians may disagree. Paul modeled this when he identified the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ as matters "of first importance" (1 Corinthians 15:3), while classifying food laws and holy days as matters of individual conscience (Romans 14:5). First-tier doctrines (Trinity, deity of Christ, justification by faith) define the boundaries of orthodoxy. Second-tier doctrines (baptism mode, church government, gender roles and headship) determine denominational fellowship. Third-tier doctrines (eschatological timelines, worship style) should not divide believers at all.

The concept, however, is ancient. The church has always distinguished between fundamental articles of faith and adiaphora (matters of indifference). The Reformers insisted on the material and formal principles of the Reformation (justification by faith alone, Scripture alone) while allowing liberty on secondary matters. Theological triage formalizes what the church has always practiced.

📖 Key Scripture

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 — "For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins."

Romans 14:1-5 — "As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions."

Jude 1:3 — "Contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints."

Titus 3:9 — "But avoid foolish controversies... for they are unprofitable and worthless."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Theological triage is abused to demote essential doctrines to matters of opinion.

The danger of theological triage is not in the framework itself but in its misapplication. Progressive evangelicals use triage language to demote clear biblical teachings (such as sexual ethics, gender roles, and the exclusivity of Christ) from first-tier essentials to third-tier opinions. "We can agree to disagree" becomes a tool for smuggling heresy into the church under the guise of charity. True triage requires courage as well as humility: the courage to draw firm lines on essential doctrines, and the humility to extend liberty where Scripture allows it. The man who makes everything a hill to die on is a schismatic; the man who makes nothing a hill to die on is a coward.

Usage

• "Theological triage demands both the courage to contend for first-order truths and the humility to extend charity on third-order matters."

• "The man who treats every doctrine as a first-tier essential will have no friends; the man who treats every doctrine as third-tier will have no convictions."
