John 13-17 records the longest connected teaching of Jesus in the Gospels, delivered to the eleven disciples on the night of His betrayal. The location begins in the upper room and continues on the walk to Gethsemane. Major elements: the foot-washing (13), prediction of betrayal and Peter's denial, the new commandment (13:34), the way-truth-life (14), the Comforter promise (14, 15, 16), the true vine (15), the world's hatred (15-16), the Spirit's convicting work (16), and the High Priestly Prayer (17).
UPPER ROOM DIS, n.
A scriptural discourse of Christ; the upper room teaching on the night of His betrayal.
John 13:34 — "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another."
John 14:6 — "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
John 15:13 — "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."
John 16:33 — "In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."
Modern Christianity dips into John 14-16 for verses; the discourse is one sustained teaching meant to be received whole.
The Upper Room Discourse is the most concentrated teaching from Jesus on the Trinity, the Spirit, the church, love, suffering, and prayer. It comes on the eve of His death and reads like a man giving his deepest wisdom in his last hour to the people he loves. Modern Christianity often dips in for verses (John 14:6; 15:13; 16:33). The discourse should be received whole.
Read John 13-17 in one sitting at least once. Note how the themes interweave: love, indwelling, abiding, departing, returning, sending, praying, glorifying. The Trinity speaks to the disciples in this passage as in few others. Christ's heart is fully exposed; receive the gift of His clearest teaching.
