Surrendered, presented, handed-over — Paul's central language for the believer's self-offering to God. Romans 6:13: Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. Romans 12:1: I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. The Greek paristemi (to present, place beside, yield) has the active sense of setting oneself or one's members at God's disposal. The yielded Christian is the Christian who has stopped negotiating with God over which parts of his life are available for redirection. Eyes, hands, mind, sexuality, schedule, money, ambitions, fears — each is presented as instrument of righteousness rather than of sin. The yielding is not passive; it is the active opposite of withholding. Christian sanctification proceeds at the speed and depth of the Christian's yielding.
