αἷμα
haima
Noun, neuter
blood

Definition

Blood — the substance of life itself. In biblical theology, haima carries immense sacrificial weight: blood represents life given, atonement made, and covenant sealed. The NT consistently points to Christ's blood as the ultimate and final sacrifice.

Usage & Theological Significance

The entire sacrificial system of the OT finds its fulfillment in Christ's blood. 'Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness' (Hebrews 9:22). At the Last Supper, Jesus declared the cup 'my blood of the covenant' (Matthew 26:28), linking His death to the Passover and the new covenant promised in Jeremiah 31. Paul speaks of redemption 'through his blood' (Ephesians 1:7). Blood is both the cost and the currency of salvation.
