ἀκολουθέω
akoloutheō
Verb
to follow, to accompany, to be a disciple

Definition

To follow someone on a road, to accompany as a companion. In the Gospels, akoloutheō becomes the technical term for discipleship — following Jesus means committing your entire life direction to Him, not just walking behind.

Usage & Theological Significance

Jesus' call 'Follow me' (akolouthei moi) is the simplest and most radical invitation in Scripture. It demanded leaving nets, tax booths, and family expectations. Following Jesus isn't passive — it means walking where He walks, even to the cross. 'If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me' (Mark 8:34). The word carries both physical movement and total life commitment.

Key Bible Verses
