ἥλιος
hēlios
Noun, Masculine
Sun

Definition

The sun. Used literally and figuratively for God's impartial goodness, apocalyptic signs, and the glory of the risen Christ.

Usage & Theological Significance

Hēlios operates on multiple theological levels. In the Sermon on the Mount, God 'maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good' (Matthew 5:45) — common grace. In the Transfiguration, Jesus' face 'did shine as the sun' (Matthew 17:2) — divine glory. In Revelation, the sun darkens in judgment (6:12) and becomes unnecessary in the New Jerusalem (21:23). The sun that began creation will be surpassed by the Creator.
