κουφίζω
kouphízō
Verb
To Lighten, To Ease a Load

Definition

Kouphízō (κουφίζω) means to lighten, to make light, to ease a burden. From kouphos (light). Appears once in Acts.

Usage & Theological Significance

Acts 27:38: 'they lightened the ship by throwing the grain into the sea.' Survival required jettisoning valuable cargo. God specializes in lightening loads. Jesus invites, 'Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest' (Matthew 11:28). The Christian life involves both holding on (faith) and letting go (casting burdens on God). Sometimes survival requires throwing overboard what was once valuable — career, reputation, comfort — for the sake of what matters eternally.
