Μετοχος
Metochos
Noun/Adjective
Partner / Companion / Partaker

Definition

From metechō (to share in). One who shares, a partner, a companion, a partaker. Used of business partners, companions of Christ, and those who share in the heavenly calling.

Usage & Theological Significance

Hebrews declares that believers have become 'partakers of Christ' (Hebrews 3:14) and 'partakers of the Holy Spirit' (Hebrews 6:4). In Hebrews 1:9, the psalm declares Christ's superiority over His 'companions' (angels or fellow-anointed ones). Luke uses it of James and John as Peter's 'partners' in the fishing business (Luke 5:7). The word teaches that salvation is not mere legal status — it is actual participation in Christ's life.
