Definition

From metrios (moderate). Moderation, self-restraint, a measured approach. Related to the virtue of temperance that Scripture repeatedly commends.

Usage & Theological Significance

The writer of Hebrews notes that the high priest should be able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness (Hebrews 5:2). The concept of moderation in dealing with others' faults reflects God's own patience. Spiritual maturity produces measured responses, not harsh reactions.
