ὁλοκαύτωμα
holokautōma
Noun, neuter
Whole Burnt Offering

Definition

Holokautōma (ὁλοκαύτωμα) means whole burnt offering — a sacrifice entirely consumed by fire, nothing reserved. From holos (whole) + kautos (burned). The most complete OT sacrifice, representing total consecration.

Usage & Theological Significance

Hebrews 10:6,8 quotes Psalm 40: God 'did not desire' mere ritual sacrifices but a body prepared for Christ. Mark 12:33: loving God and neighbor 'is more important than all burnt offerings.' The OT sacrificial system always pointed beyond itself. Jesus is the ultimate whole burnt offering: completely given, nothing held back, totally consumed by divine judgment on our behalf. Romans 12:1 calls us to respond: 'offer your bodies as a living sacrifice.'

Key Bible Verses

Hebrews 10:6 With burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased.
Mark 12:33 To love him with all your heart is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.
Romans 12:1 Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.
