Noun, Neuter
End / Boundary / Limit / Extremity

Definition

A noun meaning end, boundary, limit, or the farthest point. Used of the ends of the earth and the limits of patience. The Queen of the South came 'from the ends of the earth' to hear Solomon.

Usage & Theological Significance

Jesus said the Queen of the South came from the 'ends of the earth' to hear Solomon's wisdom, and 'something greater than Solomon is here' (Matthew 12:42). If she traveled so far for human wisdom, how much more should people seek the divine Wisdom incarnate? The 'ends of the earth' also appears in Acts 1:8 as the ultimate scope of the gospel mission — Christ's witnesses will reach the farthest boundaries of the world.
