Περιβολαιον
Peribolaion
Noun, Neuter
Covering / Cloak / Mantle

Definition

From periballō (to throw around). A covering, a wrap, a mantle that is cast around the body. Used metaphorically of creation as God's garment that will be rolled up and changed.

Usage & Theological Significance

Hebrews 1:12 quotes Psalm 102: 'You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed.' The created universe is compared to a garment God wears — beautiful but temporary, destined to be replaced. Only God Himself is eternal and unchanging. The physical universe will be transformed, but God remains the same forever.
