Definition

From peri (around) and echō (to have). To hold around, to encompass, to contain. Used of Scripture containing a passage and of astonishment seizing someone.

Usage & Theological Significance

Luke records that astonishment 'seized' Peter and all who were with him at the miraculous catch of fish (Luke 5:9). 1 Peter 2:6 says 'it stands in Scripture' — the idea that Scripture contains or holds a particular truth. God's word contains everything needed for life and godliness, and encountering God's power produces overwhelm that seizes the soul.

1 Peter 2:6 For in Scripture it says: 'See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone.'
Acts 23:25 He wrote a letter that had this content.
