Definition

From peri (exceedingly) and lupē (grief). Extremely sorrowful, deeply grieved. Used of Jesus in Gethsemane — 'My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death.'

Usage & Theological Significance

In Gethsemane, Jesus told His disciples: 'My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death' (Matthew 26:38). This word reveals the full humanity of Christ — He experienced grief at its most extreme. The Son of God was not stoic but deeply emotional. Jesus' sorrow sanctifies our own grief and assures us He understands.
