Περιστερα
Peristera
Noun, Feminine
Dove / Pigeon

Definition

The Greek word for dove or pigeon. One of the most symbolically rich creatures in Scripture — representing the Holy Spirit, peace, purity, and sacrifice.

Usage & Theological Significance

At Jesus' baptism, the Spirit descended 'like a dove' (Matthew 3:16) — gentle, pure, and peaceful. Jesus told His disciples to be 'as innocent as doves' (Matthew 10:16). Doves were also the sacrifice of the poor (Luke 2:24). The dove thus represents the Spirit's gentle nature, the call to innocence, and God's provision for the humble.
