G4240 · Greek · New Testament
πραΰτης
prautes
Noun, feminine
gentleness, meekness, humility

Definition

Strength under control — not weakness but power disciplined by love. The meek man is not a pushover but someone who has brought his power under the authority of God. Moses (Num 12:3) and Jesus (Matt 11:29) exemplify this.

Usage & Theological Significance

Classical Greek used prautes of the tamed horse — full power, fully controlled. The NT applies it to the Christian who has brought their full capacity under Christ's lordship. 'Meek' in English often sounds weak; the Greek is strong.

Key Bible Verses

Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek [prautes], for they shall inherit the earth.
Galatians 5:23 The fruit of the Spirit is...gentleness [prautes].
1 Peter 3:15 In your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to give a defense...with gentleness [prautes].

Word Study

1 Peter 3:15's apologetic instruction — give a defense with prautes — shows this is not passive silence but active, confident, gentle engagement. The meek can contend without being combative.
