προσκυνέω
proskyneō
Verb
to worship, to bow down, to pay homage

Definition

To worship, to prostrate oneself, to bow in reverence. From pros (toward) + kyneō (to kiss) — originally, to kiss toward, as in blowing a kiss to a deity. In the NT, it describes the physical act of bowing and the spiritual reality of worship directed to God alone.

Usage & Theological Significance

Jesus declared, 'God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth' (John 4:24). Proskyneō is reserved for God alone — when people worship Jesus, it is accepted (Matthew 14:33), proving His divinity. When offered to angels or humans, it is refused (Acts 10:25-26, Revelation 22:9). The final vision: every creature worshiping the Lamb (Revelation 5:14). Worship defines who you believe is ultimate.
