G5117 · Greek · New Testament
τόπος
Topos
Noun, masculine
Place, location, opportunity, role

Definition

Topos (G5117) means a place, location, space, or position — but it also extends to the figurative sense of opportunity, occasion, or role. It gives English the word 'topography.' In Scripture it spans from literal geography to spiritual categories.

Usage & Theological Significance

Jesus declares that where two or three gather in His name, He is there — the topos of His presence is the gathered community. In John 14:2–3 Jesus goes to prepare a topos — a dwelling place — for His disciples. Hebrews 12:17 uses it figuratively for Esau finding 'no place for repentance.' The concept of a prepared place for the people of God runs from the Promised Land through the temple to the New Jerusalem.
