ἀσχημοσύνη
Aschomosune
Noun, feminine
Unseemliness, indecency

Definition

The Greek noun aschomosune refers to unseemliness, indecency, or shameful behavior — conduct that is improper and degrading. Paul uses it in Romans 1:27 describing the consequences of exchanging God's truth for a lie, and Revelation 16:15 warns against being found naked and shamefully exposed.

Usage & Theological Significance

Aschomosune stands in contrast to the dignity God built into humanity as His image-bearers. When Paul describes the consequences of suppressing God's truth (Romans 1:24-27), the result is aschomosune — the corruption of human dignity and relationality. Shame entered creation at the Fall (Genesis 3:7) and will be fully removed in the new creation. Christ bore our shame on the cross (Hebrews 12:2) that we might be clothed in His righteousness — covered, dignified, and honorable before God.
