בֵּית עַזְמָוֶת
Beth-Azmaveth
Proper Noun — Place Name
Beth-Azmaveth / House of Azmaveth

Definition

Beth-Azmaveth (בֵּית עַזְמָוֶת, H1041) means 'house of Azmaveth' — likely 'house of the strength of death' (az = strong; maveth = death) or named after a person named Azmaveth. This town appears in the post-exilic lists of those who returned from Babylonian captivity (Nehemiah 7:28; Ezra 2:24 where it's called simply Azmaveth). Forty-two people from this town returned with Zerubbabel from exile — a small community, but part of the great restoration.

Usage & Theological Significance

The post-exilic return lists in Ezra and Nehemiah are often skimmed as dry genealogy, but they are in fact a theology of resurrection. Babylon was spiritual death — exile from the land, from the temple, from the visible presence of God's blessing. The return of even 42 people from Beth-Azmaveth was a reversal of death, a small but real fulfillment of Ezekiel's valley of dry bones (Ezekiel 37). The name itself — 'house of the strength of death' — becomes ironic: those who dwelt in the 'house of strong death' came back to life. This points to the pattern of death and resurrection that runs through all of Scripture and reaches its ultimate expression in Christ's resurrection. No matter how complete the death, God's power to restore exceeds it.
