גֹּבַהּ
Gobah
Noun, masculine
Height / Exaltation / Haughtiness

Definition

The Hebrew word gobah (גֹּבַהּ) means height, elevation, or exaltation. It refers to physical height — such as the height of a cedar tree — but also describes the pride and arrogance of the human heart that elevates itself above God. The word appears in both literal and metaphorical senses throughout the Old Testament.

Usage & Theological Significance

In Scripture, gobah of heart (pride) is consistently portrayed as an abomination before God. Proverbs repeatedly contrasts the proud who will be brought low with the humble who will be exalted. The same God who created towering heights in creation also topples the heights of human arrogance. This word reminds the believer that true exaltation belongs only to God, and that spiritual growth begins with the lowering of self.
