גָּבֹהַּ
gaboah
Adjective
high/lofty/tall/proud

Definition

An adjective meaning high, lofty, tall, or exalted. It describes physical height but also, crucially, the spiritual condition of pride — being exalted in one's own eyes. The word can be used positively (of God's majesty) or negatively (of human arrogance). Context determines whether the loftiness is divine glory or sinful pride.

Usage & Theological Significance

The Hebrew mind saw deep connection between spatial height and spiritual status. God dwells in the heights; the proud man elevates himself to compete with God. Gaboah thus carries both wonder and warning. When applied to God it speaks of transcendent majesty — he is high and lifted up. When applied to humans it speaks of dangerous self-inflation. Isaiah 57:15 beautifully holds both together: the High and Lofty One inhabits eternity but also dwells with the contrite and humble — bringing divine height low to lift the lowly high.

1 Samuel 2:3 Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance.
