גְּבוּרָה
Geburah
Noun, feminine
Might, strength, power

Definition

The Hebrew word geburah (גְּבוּרָה) denotes mighty power, heroic strength, or powerful deeds. It derives from the root gabar (to be strong, prevail) and is used for both human valor and divine omnipotence. When applied to God, it refers to His sovereign might displayed in creation, exodus, judgment, and salvation.

Usage & Theological Significance

Geburah is one of the great attributes of God celebrated in Scripture. The Psalms resound with praise for God's geburot (mighty acts). Isaiah 11:2 lists geburah as one of the Spirit's seven-fold endowments on the Messiah. In Chronicles, David ascribes geburah to God: 'Yours is the greatness and the power and the glory' (1 Chronicles 29:11). The word connects military valor (Gideon, David) with divine strength, reminding believers that true power comes from the Lord.
