אָוָה
avah
Verb
to desire, long for, crave

Definition

The Hebrew verb avah (אָוָה) means to desire, crave, or intensely long for something. The root captures deep appetite and longing — an inner craving that drives toward its object. The related noun avvah (H185) and ta'avah (H8378) develop this idea of desire and appetite further.

The word can describe both legitimate longing (a soul that yearns for God's courts) and destructive craving (the lust for forbidden things). Context determines whether the desire expressed is good or sinful. The verb appears in passages about Israel craving meat in the wilderness (Numbers 11:4) and in David's longing for water from the well of Bethlehem (2 Samuel 23:15).

Usage & Theological Significance

The theology of desire runs through all of Scripture. Desire itself is God-given — we are creatures who long for beauty, goodness, love, and ultimately for God Himself. Augustine's famous prayer captures this: 'You have made us for Yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in You.'

The problem is not desire itself but disordered desire — craving what is not ours, what God has not given, or what draws us away from Him. The 10th commandment ('Do not covet,' Exodus 20:17) addresses this root. James 4:2 diagnoses the human problem as ungoverned desire: 'You desire (epithumeo) but do not have.' The solution is not the eradication of desire but its reorientation — desiring God above all else (Psalm 73:25).
