הוֹן
Hon
Noun, masculine
Wealth / Riches / Substance

Definition

Hon is the general Hebrew term for wealth, material substance, possessions, or riches. It is a neutral word — it does not carry moral charge in itself. Hon can be the product of diligence (Prov 10:15) or the result of hasty schemes (13:11); it can be offered to God (3:9) or pursued at the expense of integrity (1:13; 28:22). What Proverbs does with hon is not condemn it but interrogate it — how it was gained, what it does to the man who holds it, and what it cannot provide.

Usage & Theological Significance

Proverbs returns to hon ten times — more than almost any other book — because wealth is one of the primary testing grounds of wisdom. Proverbs' teaching on hon is subtle and must be held together as a whole rather than cherry-picked:

Hon has real power (10:15 — "A rich man's wealth is his strong city"). Money provides security, options, influence. Proverbs does not pretend otherwise. The poor man is not automatically more righteous; the rich man is not automatically less so.

Hon has real limits (11:4 — "Riches do not profit in the day of wrath; but righteousness delivers from death"). When the final accounting comes — whether the day of crisis, the day of death, or the day of judgment — hon cannot save. The man who has built his entire life on the accumulation of hon has misread the situation.

Hon reveals character (13:7 — "One pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth"). How a man holds, displays, and relates to his money is a window into his soul. The fool with hon is a moqesh to himself (28:22 — "a stingy man hastens after wealth and does not know that poverty will come upon him").

Hon must be given to God first (3:9 — "Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce"). The offering is not extraction — it is reorientation. When hon flows to God first, it reminds its owner that he is steward, not owner.
