Yaal
Verb
Profit / Benefit / Avail

Definition

The Hebrew verb yaal means to profit, benefit, gain advantage, or be of use. It appears about 23 times in the Old Testament, most frequently in the form lo yaal"it will not profit" or "it does not avail" — as a sharp prophetic dismissal of idols, false securities, and empty pursuits. The word carries the weight of practical wisdom: yaal asks not just whether something exists or appears impressive, but whether it actually delivers real benefit.

In Proverbs 10:2, yaal frames one of the book's foundational contrasts: "Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit, but righteousness delivers from death." The verb cuts through the illusion of ill-gotten gain — it appears to profit, but it ultimately does not. Proverbs 11:4 strikes the same note with the approach of death and judgment: "Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death."

Usage & Theological Significance

The prophets deploy yaal most devastatingly against idols. Isaiah uses it repeatedly: "They pour gold from the bag... yet it cannot be moved from its place. One cries to it, but it does not answer or save him from his trouble" (Isaiah 46:6–7). The idol takes but never gives; it demands but never delivers. The question yaal poses is ruthlessly practical: Does this actually work? Does this actually help you when everything falls apart?

In Proverbs, the same logic is applied to wealth. The issue is not that wealth is intrinsically evil — Proverbs acknowledges its real advantages. The issue is what wealth is treated as: a source of security, status, and worth that it cannot ultimately provide. Wealth fails the yaal test at the moments that matter most. When judgment comes, when disease strikes, when death looms — riches built on wickedness avail nothing. Only righteousness — right relationship with God and others — delivers.

This makes yaal a word of profound discernment. The wise man asks before every major pursuit: Will this actually profit? Will this avail me in the end? Proverbs insists that the answer to those questions leads inevitably back to the fear of the LORD and the way of wisdom.
