Definition

The Hebrew verb or (אוֹר) means to be or become luminous — to shine, to give light, or to illuminate. It is the verbal root of the noun or (light, H216) and appears in creation, blessing, and divine illumination contexts throughout Scripture.

Usage & Theological Significance

Light is inseparable from God's character and creative power. The Aaronic blessing invokes God to make His face shine (Numbers 6:25). Isaiah envisions a day when the LORD will be your everlasting light (Isaiah 60:19).
