chazaq
Verb
To be strong, to strengthen, to prevail, to take hold of

Definition

A primitive root, chazaq means to be or grow strong, firm, or courageous. It can also be used causatively, meaning to strengthen, uphold, or repair. It encompasses the idea of seizing, holding fast, and prevailing.

Usage & Theological Significance

Chazaq is a key term in the context of leadership, covenant, and faith. God frequently commands his leaders, like Moses and Joshua, to "be strong (chazaq) and courageous." This strength is not self-derived but is rooted in God's presence and promises. The call to chazaq is a call to be firm in faith and to act decisively based on God's word. It is also used to describe God strengthening His people or, in a negative sense, hardening the hearts of His enemies (like Pharaoh).
