חֶמְדָּה
Chemdah
Noun, feminine
Delight, desire, precious treasure

Definition

The Hebrew noun chemdah refers to something intensely desired or delighted in — a precious object, a person of deep attraction, or a coveted possession. It is related to the verb chamad (H2530, to covet/desire).

Usage & Theological Significance

Chemdah points to that which is supremely precious and longed for. The 'desired one' of Haggai 2:7 — 'the desire of all nations shall come' — is a Messianic title pointing to Christ as the ultimate chemdah of the human heart. The word also captures the tragedy of misplaced longing: when Israel 'despised the pleasant land' (Psalm 106:24), they rejected what God treasured. Proverbs warns about the chemdah of the adulteress's house — beauty that conceals death. True chemdah is found only in God and his Word.
