machmad
Noun, masculine
desirable thing, treasure, delight

Definition

Machmad (H4261) describes the most cherished, treasured things β€” the delight of the eyes, the objects of one's deepest longing. In Lamentations, it is used for all the precious things of Jerusalem stripped away in exile. The word captures what we hold most dear and thus reveals the theology of loss, idolatry, and true treasure.

Usage & Theological Significance

Ezekiel uses machmad when God warns He will take away 'the delight of your eyes' β€” Ezekiel's wife β€” as a sign of Israel's coming loss (Ezekiel 24:16). The same word used for illicit treasures is used for the true treasure of God's temple and worship. Theologically, machmad asks: what is the deepest desire of your heart? Is it aligned with God's own heart?
