The Hebrew word ma'on means dwelling, habitation, or refuge. It derives from a root meaning to dwell or abide and denotes a settled, permanent residence — a place of safety, belonging, and rest. It is used both for God's heavenly dwelling and for the lair or den of wild animals.
The most powerful use of ma'on appears in Psalm 90:1 — the psalm of Moses — which declares that the LORD Himself has been Israel's dwelling place (ma'on) throughout all generations. Before the mountains were formed, before the earth existed, God was already the home and refuge of His people. This is a radical theological claim: the ultimate dwelling place is not a location but a Person. God is not only the builder of our house; He is our house. This concept reaches its New Testament fulfillment in John 15:4, where Jesus invites believers to abide in Him.
