אֶלְצָפָן
Eltsaphan
Proper Name, masculine
God has treasured/God is protector

Definition

The name Eltsaphan (also spelled Elizaphan) combines El (God) and tsaphan (to hide, treasure, protect), meaning "God has hidden/treasured" or "God is protector." This name appears in Numbers 3:30 and 1 Chronicles 15:8 among the Kohathite Levites appointed to carry the most sacred furnishings of the tabernacle.

Usage & Theological Significance

The Levites named Eltsaphan carried what God had "treasured" — the ark, the lampstand, the altar. Their task mirrored their name: guarding what God guards. The theological concept of God "hiding" or "treasuring" His people runs through Scripture: Psalm 27:5 — "In the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent." Those whom God treasures, He protects; those He protects, He sends as vessels for His glory.
